Some students choose to defer their place at university and take a gap year. This can be for a variety of reasons: possibly to travel, to gain work experience, to volunteer or undertake charity work, to earn money, to broaden horizons and develop life experiences or possibly because students are still unsure of what course to take.
There are many different organizations which facilitate gap years both in this country and throughout the world. There are also a host of websites students are access.
Work experience or voluntary work undertaken during a gap year will enhance a student’s life skills, levels of confidence, independence and financial capabilities, especially if living away from home. Students will acquire transferable skills useful for future courses and careers. Using part of a gap year for travel abroad will broaden the mind, promote independence and decision making and overall personal development.
